My "Top 50 Employee" Trophy

So today I was given a trophy at work. Apparently I am a top 50 employee at Kabam.
I thought the bomb portion might be filled with candy but realised it's an 8 ball!

I've been busy prepping for CTN Expo

I've been working very hard to prepare for CTN Expo! Staying up to as late as 3am has been happening regularly for me. My eyes are looking bloodshot each evening. I did make some time this past weekend to make pumpkin chocolate chip cookies and go to a friend's birthday BBQ but I haven't been able to fit in much socialising recently. Actually I stopped by APE and caught up with my friend Katie Shanahan on Oct. 12, visiting from Toronto. I've been working on designing a business card for myself and got really carried away with that. I was designing some elaborate cards on the weekend. I ended up doubting their practicality and went through a few iterations before I ended up going with the final idea. I still need to finish my demo reel 3D showpiece.

A young man has been contacting me via my Pickled Production blog with some animation questions and I told him that if he wanted, I would give him a couple free animation lessons when I'm done with CTN. So he will be my first animation student for the school I want to open! I actually purchased a domain name for my school and for Pickled too. I had a fun experience trying to purchase I offered $60 for one week and $75 for the next two weeks. I then gave up on pursuing it when the owner of the domain wouldn't return my messages. So on week four I received a counter offer for $65 535. As an independent film maker planning on making no money from my film, so there is no way I'd can pay much more than $75 for a domain for such a project. I went to purchase which I actually like better. Got it for $77.14 for the next 5 years. The owner of was actually very nice and professional and the asking price was more reasonable; offering that domain for $900. Still out of my price range though.

I'm enjoying my pink hair these days. Here's a selfie I took of my victory rolls I wore to work one day last week:

Random News: Maya workshop finished and movies I've watched recently

The Maya workshop I took was with Animation Mentor and it was fantastic! Much of the material was very simple and the class was not quite as advanced as I would have hoped for. But that wasn't a bad thing really since it let me reinforce a lot of my Maya basics. Most of the students were completely new to animation and some of them dropped out, some of them realised animation wasn't for them, some of them thrived and gave every assignment their all. I asked all the questions I had during the online Question and Answer sessions and when I was able to answer other people questions in class or via email or facebook I jumped in there and tried to help out. I understand the huge value of collaboration and community within the animation industry. Some of the questions asked in class were "what is onion skinning" and "what is straight ahead" so I definitely answered those ones. Other times when students were getting stuck on assignments I was able to figure out what they were having trouble with and give help. By the end of the class more and more people were participating and answering questions, it was great!

Sabrina's last animation peer review at Kabam!

While I've been a terrible workaholic for the past couple months I did find the time to go to Smuggler's Cove (an awesome Tiki bar!) with some friends, I saw John Brassell on his birthday, I finished up a huge work assignment, I discovered gold kiwis can be bought at Berkely Bowl, I've continued to feast on fresh figs while they're in season, I beat Fez (with a lil internet help), I went to the newly renovated Lafayette Park, I said goodbye to a friend/coworker who is moving on to animate at another company, (Bye Sabrina!), I've started watching more movies and I had an epiphany about self projection and self awareness when I watched footage of myself that I filmed for some animation shots for my short film.

As for watching more movies, so far I've watched Kagemusha by Akira Kurasawa and I'm part way through Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb by Stanley Kubrick. I've got a list of movies I want to watch and directors and actors I want to see more of and I'm hoping to tackle this list finally on Friday/Saturday/Sunday nights.

Right now I've got a horrible cold. I can tell that it's going to get worse before it gets better so I'm taking it easy at home and continuing my workaholism thing. Trying to eat healthy and not stress out.

New Felix the Cat Dress

Also I dyed the back of my hair brown again so the blonde bit is only a fat streak now.

I was at the dentist this morning at 8am to get a filling and possible root canal but it was determined that a root canal was unnecessary! Woo!

Personal Update: Maya, hair, pants, clutter, babysitting

I have been busy recently. What else is new, right? My priorities have been shifted around a bit. I've put off working on my film for now as I'm trying to teach myself Maya. I signed up for a Maya workshop by Animation Mentor that is 6 weeks and starts on August 5. So I will have homework! Thus the infrequency of blog posts. I'm no longer able to sign into my old fashion-matter blog and it seems like if I wanted to get ahold of that one again I would have to go to court to prove my identity. It's occurred to me to start up a new fashion blog but that is a serious dedication! So, maybe. I kind of miss having a corner of the web where I can say whatever I want about fashion and style. I've been semi frustrated that my Pickled blog has turned into more of a general animation blog rather than focusing on the production of my film.

I've started to think about Halloween and it's distracting! I'll try not to spend much money but I just ordered a pair of pants that are somewhat custom order :D I think this year (as in some other years) I will use Halloween as an opportunity to get some funky new clothes and then just dress up however I want. I've been getting a lot of weird pants recently including a pair of vintage velvet high waisted ones and some super drop crotch harem style pants in purple. They're called leisure pants. Those are still in the mail on their way to me.

I noticed that a few of my hairs have been falling out after my last bleaching. It's stopped and wasn't very much, but I'm going to stop using the 40 developer that I introduced into my hair regime. Back to 30.

I finally ended up cutting my hair too just over a week ago. I read this article about how people hang on to things which create clutter. People feel like "they may use said item one day" or they have some sort of emotional connection to it (re: feel guilty about parting with it), or they may not want to let something go after they spent substantial money to acquire it. Reading this article felt like permission to let a bunch of the junk I've collected in my home go. I've got rid of some items, cleaned and organized my home and chopped 6 inches off my hair. I remember when I moved to San Francisco and had only 2 suitcases of belongings. It was pretty great. Clutter definitely affects me in a negative way.

I had a very busy weekend this past one. Sunday was my good friend Ania's birthday and she wanted to go on a daylong tour of wineries with her hubby. She asked if I would babysit for the day and I said yes of course. Doing something for Ania (on her birthday) is something I very much wanted to do. I also wanted to get her a small gift... Small because I'm trying to be spend conscious. So I got her a bouquet of flowers and on Saturday baked one of her favorites; almond scones. The muscles in my back were all sore on Monday from playing with and carrying around a 2 year old for 10.5 hours. It was a good workout. So I didn't end up touching any animation related work this weekend. Not a big deal or nothin'. Hanging out with her son all day was funs. He is super sweet.

I saw Pacific Rim on opening night and it was pretty awesome. I liked that it didn't take itself too seriously and the action sequences were cool. The whole thing was cool. My jaw was hanging open for about half the film.

I have a craving to do an epic amount of baking... I feel like making bread or dimsum or moon cookies or pie or something. If only I had the time.

Closet Surfing and Desk Cleaning

What I wore to the cafe today.
That there is my closet. It's a bit crammed. I literally had to dig through it to find what I wanted to wear today.
I wish this photo wasn't so blurry... it's the adorable remaining gourds courtesy of Marnie from October 2012. Mine (on the far right) outlasted the others in terms of the race to be as shrivelled up and dusty as possible. But it was time at last to say goodbye to the gourds... I cleaned up my desk on Thursday. I've been dreaming of decorating my desk for a long time.... I would be surprised if it ever really happens but at least I can have a cleaner desk. Though I still need to dust. I'll keep researching desk decor for now.

Silly Braided Hair

I just braided it on each side and then stuck it to the back of my head. It's pretty much nonsense but that's ok.
What I really need is some hair gel or something so that braids keep curly :)

Visit to The Haight in San Francisco

I visited The Haight yesterday for a little jaunt! I visited one of my favorite shops; Held Over. This is the shop where I found my beloved black velvet cloak.
I was enchanted at Distractions; The Haights Original Eclectic Emporium! I tried on 3 sets of steampunk goggles there and drooled over poofy skirts and dresses. Oh how I would love to have an occasion to wear a tophat and goggles. I'm already waiting for Halloween and Holiday parties so I have reasons to dress up.

The Haight Street Market has offerings that cannot be found at my local Trader Joes or Wholefoods.
I also dropped by the Kid Robot Store. Did you know that it is Munny Month? There are some cool Munny goings ons this month and also the do it yourself toys are on sale!
Here are a couple looks I saw in windows that I thought were awesome. One is a little hard to make out, the the model is wearing multi-neon coloured leggings, a shiny red mini mini skirt and a patterned sleeveless top with a hot pink hat. I love the expert mix of pattern and colour.
The second look is more green all over and another great mix of pattern and colour. I'm impressed that green and black checkerboard leggings were made to looks so good in this ensemble.
Also this cool wooden parrot:

Inline Skating at Golden Gate Park

I finally made it out inline skating at Golden Gate park!
Here's the people who know what they're doing at 6th and Fulton:
I don't really get how people look so put together and casual while they skate and bike. I mean, I've got a centimetre of gloppy water proof sunscreen on my face, I wear my huge gym outfit and then everything is covered in a sheen of sweat. There are girls here with fishnet stockings and thigh high rainbow socks. I guess I could do that if I was there to skate more casually and not just exercise...

It's like skating and biking heaven here. Actually I really want to come back with a bike rental since I'd be more adventurous. I'm not actually very good at skating, (though I do enjoy it,) so if I had a bike there would be way more paths I could manage to do.
Here is a human made waterfall, of which I had to wait for a pack of segway riders to move out of the way to take a photo of:
And here are some photos of the rose garden:
